Description
The Crofton Beam Engines were built 200 years ago to supply water to the highest point of the Kennet & Avon canal. They illustrate directly the development of motive power and canal transport. During the Steam Weekend, the place really comes to life with the hand-stoked Lancashire boiler in operation, 6 and 4 tonne oscillating beams and tonnes of water cascading into the canal leat.
The Cafe offers a range of drinks, cakes and light snacks. If the weather is set to be fine, there will also be a BBQ.
Members free, guests at £6.50 each and accompanied children under 16 also go free.
While the site cannot offer a guide tour on Steaming Days, they will provide an introductory talk, which has been arranged for 10.30. The site is open from then until 17.00.
Field parking on site.
