Description
An evening lecture on an "Introduction to Clouds"
The Natural Environment Research (NERC) MST Radar Facility at Aberystwyth is
an atmospheric science field station. It operates a variety of instruments
including the Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere (MST) Radar, which measures
the wind. This instrument is large (its antenna array covers an area of 100 m squared) and highly-specialised (it is the only one of its kind in the UK). By
contrast, the Facility's Sky-Camera is an inexpensive, general-purpose
web-cam. It captures an image of sky conditions every minute. These images
have proved to be surprisingly useful when viewed as time-lapse
animations. This can reveal details that are not obvious in individual
images. This talk will use sky-camera images and sequences to illustrate the
significance of some particular cloud types.
This event is aimed at members of all grades and their guests. Due to the location it is essential that you book a free ticket in advance.
Arrive 18:00 for a 18:30 start (to manage reception). Photographic ID will be required. The lecture is scheduled to run from 18:30-19:30 and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
