Description

Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plants built in the UK, and the rest of Europe, were built on the forecast of high running hours and load factors, with the plant designs optimized to extract maximum efficiency.  Over the last 3 to 5 years there has been a significant reduction in CCGT operating hours and load factors both in the UK and across the rest of Europe, this is a result of various factors, including the reduction in price of coal, collapse in the price of carbon, reduction in consumer demand, and increased renewable penetration in the market.  These factors have significantly changed the commercial feasibility for CCGTs and changed how they are rewarded in the market.

This presentation will cover the following areas:

•         Changes to electricity market that CCGTs have responded to

•         How this has affected the operating profile of CCGTs

•         The technical challenges the new operating profile presents

•         Opportunities to remain competitive in the current market and future via plant modification
