Join Richard East, newly-elected Chairman of the IMechE Railway Division, for his presentation on how the industry should focus its development and investment on future projects supported by the Government, and the key areas that he believes will make the most difference. A poster is available.
The presentation will illustrate how engineers can contribute to a successful railway industry of the future. This will include addressing challenges arising from:
• Continued passenger and freight growth
• Sustainability considerations including fuel choice, emissions
• Train control options to improve capacity
• Opportunities provided by enhanced communications
• Transport modal shift
The presentation will also provide examples of how the industry should become more system orientated and use experience gained in Europe and other parts of the world. The presentation will also review how the industry should take advantage of imminent changes resulting from Crossrail and High Speed Rail.
