In order to encourage engagement with young people and inspire the next generation, we are inviting you to come along to learn how to run fun engineering activities for primary to early secondary age children. The workshop is being run by IMechE Fellow and STEM educator Caroline Alliston of Technology for Fun and will introduce some of her most popular STEM projects.

Participants will learn how to design, make and test their own vibrating brush monsters, CD racers, Cartesian divers and balloon buggies. The projects are designed to tie in with the school curriculum (D&T, electricity, forces and materials) and to provide a fun, engaging, design and build experience.

After the training session volunteers can run the activities at a school of their choice, with Scouts, Cubs, Guides, Brownies etc., or just with their own children or young relatives. The activities are also popular at children’s parties and local festivals.

These projects have proved extremely popular with schools who are keen to include enriching cross-curricular activities. The IMechE can help with funding for materials for running the activities in schools.

Open to all members, not just YM or STEM Ambassadors.

Be prepared for lots of fun and a rewarding experience inspiring the next generation! Here is some feedback from four different workshops:

A teacher: "My class made balloon buggies and it was a great success! The children really enjoyed it, improving their skills in both DT and Science."

Another teacher: "A huge thank you for your visit. The activity really complemented and enriched our science topic of 'Forces.' The children were able to use and apply their knowledge, testing out theories in a practical environment. Above all the activity was great fun - inspiring the children (and staff) and helping them to appreciate the sheer scope of engineering as a career.

A pupil: "I particularly enjoyed it because it was fun as you were helping and teaching us how to get a bigger education. It has now made me want to be an engineer when I am older."

An engineer: "The teachers were very thankful and the children all had a wonderful day with some commenting that 'it was the best day of their lives'!! On a personal note it was very rewarding."
