Description

Application of digital technology to enhance Safety, Reliability and Utilisation of the UK Railway. A joint event with the RAeS.

Talk Synopsis

In May 2001 a national program was created for the application of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) in Great Britain. This program has been included and updated in cross industry work to form part of the national operation strategy, led by Network Rail. This application is in accordance with the specifications published by the European Railway Agency and is supported by complementary national requirements, standards and operational rules.

The deployment of ERTMS features heavily in the Industry Strategic Business plan for the period 2014-2019 (Control Period 5) and beyond.

The speaker has represented the UK on the development of this program, which by importing GPS data directly into the Train cabs aims to improve rail safety, reliability and utilisation.

Embedded in the talk are new videos showing how the system will work.
