Enter Speak Out for Engineering to compete for cash prizes

Speak Out for Engineering is a competition designed to help develop verbal and visual communication in explaining technical mechanical engineering related subjects.

However, if you are already a talented public speaker then the competition is your chance to demonstrate your skill!

The competition is open to any Affiliate, Associate or Young Member of the Institution (professionally registered for ten years or less) and includes a free tour of the plant.

Our Hosts

The competition is being hosted by the MVV Energy from Waste Plant, a higly modern and efficient plant which provides a waste treatment solution for the South West Devon Waste Partnership. It deals with waste from Plymouth, Devon and Torbay that is not recycled or composted and generates electricity as well as usable heat in combined heat and power (CHP) mode, thereby saving valuable fossil resources and reducing carbon dioxide output.

Applicants, please note:


General notes:

  • Supporters and audience are required, not just presenters
  • Event is free and includes a tour of MVV's Energy from Waste Plant, Devonport. (If you wish to participate in the tour please note, heeled shoes are not permitted and shoes must cover the whole foot)
  • We must have a minimum of 3 participants for the event to be run – if the event is cancelled, you will be notified by 15th October
  • Applications must contain a 200 word synopsis of the topic
  • If more than 4 applications are received, we will ask for a 2 minute synopsis video of presentations which will be shortlisted.

Timetable for the day

09:45  Venue opens

10:10  Introductions and welcomes 

10:15  1st Presenter (20 minute presentation and 10 minute Q&A)

10:45  2nd Presenter (20 minute presentation and 10 minute Q&A)

11:15   Coffee Break

11:30  3rd Presenter (20 minute presentation and 10 minute Q&A)

12:00  4th Presenter (20 minute presentation and 10 minute Q&A)

12:30 - 14:00  Lunch and tour of the MVV site. Depending on the number of attendees there may be multiple, staggered tours to accommodate everyone who wishes to visit. 

14:00   Winners announced and prizes awarded, photographs.
