History - the RB199 started in 1968.

The tri-national Panavia Tornado is still in Service, except for the RAF. This lecture highlights the Requirements, the RB199 Engine Design, and its Performance, HPTurbine technology, Reheat technology, and Control System technology embedded within a very successful aircraft.

Some performance data is shown, identifying medium bypass ratio for preference

HP Turbine design highlights, manufacture, cooling, and aerodynamics are shown.

Control System design - electronics and dry fuel system 

Reheat Tailpipe Design and Reheat Control

LPC1, HPT, IPT and LPT2 blades are available to look at, obtained from eBay!

Jim Quinn BSc FIMechE started in combat engine performance in 1967 on BS143, helped launch the RB199 engine in 1968, and left the Project in 1988 as RB199 Assistant Chief Engineer having managed the development of Europe's first production single crystal turbine blade.
