Ammonia - the global reserve fuel for the 21st Century

Solving some of the 'wicked problems' of a decarbonised energy system

The challenges of replacing easily stored high energy density fossil fuels in a world that probably has to go beyond zero carbon to negative carbon are not easily solved.  But as Sherlock Holmes famously said: "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth".

This talk will cover the reasons for ammonia being the reserve fuel of choice and how it can play in areas such as long-term grid support, shipping and aviation.  It will touch on the issues of scale and cost, and examine ways to overcome the hazards by making ammonia storage and transport intrinsically safe.

Mike is an engineer, with an MBA, a MSc in Environmental Change and management, and a D. Phil in plant sciences and renewable energy.  After a career as a practical mining engineer in Africa, Mike returned to the UK and worked for a while in the oil industry before founding his own IT startup.  He has subsequently invested in a range of healthcare and green technologies, with exits to JP Morgan and Mercedes Benz among others.

His current focus is on climate change where Mike has been active for over 30 years.  He is currently on the Steering Committee of the MariNH3 multi-university group developing combustion technologies for the shipping industry and chairs its International Advisory Board.  He is also convenor of the Green Ammonia Working Group of academics.
