IMechE Western Region Dinner 2012 Event Poster

Dinner on the Grand Pier, with a talk by Kerry Michael (Owner) on the History of the Pier and a talk by Dr Tim Fox on the growth of the human population and the challenge to Engineers.

By the end of this century there will be an estimated 9.5 billion people living on the planet, 75% of them located in urban settlements and striving for increased living standards. More mouths to feed and changes in tastes for food types will mean doubling world agricultural production in four decades, water consumption will increase 30% by 2030, and three billion extra people will seek shelter in urban settings by mid-century. Add to this the need for energy to underpin post-industrial, industrial and newly industrialising nations alike, with demand doubling by 2050, and there is a significant challenge for governments, society at large, and the engineering profession in particular.

Speaker(s)

Dr Tim Fox - IMechE Environmental Theme Manager. Tim was lead author on the Institution’s groundbreaking report “Population: One Planet, Too many People?” and curator of the follow-on international ‘Population Challenge’ competition for young engineers.
