Our annual Family Evening this year is a presentation by Dave Saunders on that most controversial of characters from railway history, Dr Richard Beeching. The 'Beeching Report' (The Reshaping of British Railways) was published on 27th March 1963 and is one of the most notorious government reports of the 20th century. The failure of the modernisation plan to stem BR's losses led Beeching to propose wholesale route closures in an attempt to concentrate resources on the core routes.
Was he wrong, or right? Was he led or misguided or a farsighted thinker?
See if you agree with Dave's thoughts.

This is our Family Evening and ALL are welcome to join us for the lecture and afterwards for the hot buffet and drinks at the Steam Museum Swindon.
