Description

The Avro Vulcan’s origins are to be found nearly 70 years ago, at the end of the Second World War. The Vulcan Story summarises the history of the aircraft from its inception, through RAF service to the only time it was ever used in anger. Following the end of the aircraft’s military service, the project to restore Avro Vulcan XH558 to flight is possibly the most difficult historic aircraft restoration project ever undertaken in the UK, and one which has established a wealth of best practice.

The talk will summarise the background and significance of the programme, and then focus on the restoration project itself. In particular, various problems and issues encountered will be highlighted, together with how they were overcome, leading to the spectacular first test flight on 18th October 2007. Finally, the talk will explain the current status of the programme, the challenges it faces keeping the aircraft flying, and proposals for the longer term, including broader public benefits.
