Description

On 26 April 1986, the world's worst nuclear disaster unfolded in the former USSR at Chernobyl Unit 4, a name that has become synonymous with safety culture failings in the nuclear industry. Nearly 29 years on, this lecture will explore the extraordinary sequence of events that led to the dramatic destruction of a plant that was perceived to be cutting-edge at the time. The talk will include a technical overview of the progression and causes of the accident, its aftermath and also look at what's happening on the site today, with stunning pictures and first-hand experience from a recent site visit. Consideration will also be given to the differences with the UK civil nuclear industry and how such an event is guarded against.
