The lecture will give an overview of the properties and applications of active materials, composites and structures. There will outline the research by Chris Bowen in the areas of functional materials such as ferroelectrics and piezoelectric composites. By attending this lecture you will get an understanding of the range of active and smart materials that are available today along with some demonstrations. The talk will explore the potential applications of these materials, from sensors for hostile environments, bistable structures for harvesting energy, porous ferroelectrics for SONAR and novel biomaterials.
