    Over the past year or more building work has been going ahead on Gloucestershire’s new “Energy from Waste” (GEfW) next to Junction 12 of the M5. The construction of this facility is part of a joint venture between Urbaser and Balfour Beatty (UBB Gloucestershire). The talk will address the facility as a whole and there will be a chance for questions afterwards.

    The aim of the Submarine Dismantling Project (SDP) is to deliver a safe, environmentally responsible and cost effective solution for the dismantling of 27 of the UK’s defueled nuclear powered submarines. This presentation will describe the strategic approach to the SDP, the programme structure, scope and infrastructure upgrades required to support the radioactive waste removal process and a forward looking view of the challenges that lie ahead.Further information can be viewed in the attachment.

Mike Donnington will be our guest speaker, Mike is currently head of the SDP activities for Babcock International Group and will talk us through Learning from Experience (LfE) in delivering such a complex nuclear project.

    The Big Bang Science and Engineering Festival for 2019 will be based at the Winter Gardens on the Weston Super Mare seafront on 26th and 27th April 2019. The aim of the festival is to partially compensate for the lack of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) being taught in primary schools and the narrow coverage of these subjects in secondary schools.

    The speaker will talk about the recent successes with the University of Nottingham's electric motorcycle, this year beating the previous electric course record for the TT Zero. Narrowly missing out on the win to Mugen Honda. The Pikes Peak (winning their class) and Moto-E (beating many petrol bikes). From a technical perspective the speaker will run through the development of the electric bikes. Highlighting the major challenges which needed to be overcome and the complex engineering employed.
