    Urbaser - UK Gloucestershire Energy from Waste - Haresfield
    Gloucestershire’s “Energy from Waste” facility is a key element of local waste management. Operational in 2019, it takes waste that would otherwise go to landfill and produces electricity. Its design and operation is of great interest to engineers. The 2-hour visit involves a presentation and a walking-tour of some of the facility. The walking tour takes in the Waste Reception Hall, Waste Bunker, and a view of the waste burning on the grate.

    Gorst Energy is an anaerobic digestion (AD) facility located in Clyst St Mary, on the outskirts of Exeter. They process agricultural feedstocks supplied by local farmers, primarily pig manure and sustainably grown crops. It operates under a partnership with Devon County Council and safely diverts about 60,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste away from landfill from households within Exeter and the surrounding area each year and enough electricity to power the equivalent of 6,624 homes.

A number of case studies will be used to illustrate the problem and some solutions, including a road sweeper, a work boat, and a defence vehicle.
