Today, we produce about four billion metric tonnes of food per annum. Yet due to poor practices in harvesting, storage and transportation, as well as market and consumer waste, it is estimated that 30–50% of all food produced never reaches a human stomach. Dr Tim Fox will consider what engineers, governments, and businesses need to prioritise to reduce food wastage in the developing economies of the world and thereby help underpin international food security.

The Hitachi Super Express Train is the new generation of high speed trains which will operate on the Great Western Main Line after it is electrified, and on other inter-city routes in Britain. The trains will be assembled at a new factory in the north of England and the GW trains will be maintained at depots in Bristol and west London. The lecture will include aspects of the design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of the trains.
