Welcome to the Swindon and North Wiltshire Area

About the Swindon and North Wiltshire Area

The Swindon and North Wiltshire Area of the IMechE is an active local community for members who live and work across the SN and BA12–BA15 postcode regions. It exists to connect engineers, celebrate the area’s engineering heritage, and support professional development at every career stage.

The Area is currently being re-energised under the leadership of Ross and Charlotte, who are working with a re-vitalised committee and local members to rebuild a vibrant programme of activities and strengthen links with employers, universities and schools across the region.

Members who would like to get more involved in shaping this community — from helping to organise events to suggesting technical visits or outreach ideas — are warmly encouraged to contact the committee via the CONTACT US page.

Engineering heritage

Swindon and Wiltshire have long been at the heart of British mechanical engineering. The story began with Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Great Western Railway Works in Swindon, which became one of the country’s most important railway engineering centres and helped define the town’s identity for generations.

Following the decline of the railway industry, the area successfully diversified, moving from a single-industry town to a broader base of manufacturing, defence and high-value engineering, including significant activity at MOD Lyneham including The Defense School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME) including the ARMY REME and RAF 4SofTT training units. This shift laid the foundations for the modern mix of industrial, defence and technology employers seen today.

The Swindon Panel of the IMechE was inaugurated on 5 February 1975, later becoming the Swindon Area through the Regional Network reorganisation on 27 May 1998, and the committee now looks to honour that legacy while opening up new opportunities for current and future members.

Science, research and innovation

Swindon is home to UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) at Polaris House, making the area a national centre for research funding and science policy. The UK Space Agency also maintains an established presence in Swindon as part of its UK-wide network of offices, supporting the growth of the UK space sector.

Wiltshire is rapidly building a reputation as a hub for advanced drone and uncrewed systems manufacturing, with new facilities in and around Swindon expected to create hundreds of highly skilled engineering roles and support full life-cycle activities from prototyping through to scaled production and testing. This growing cluster sits alongside wider strengths in defence, aerospace, robotics and autonomous systems, offering members a wide range of local industrial connections.

Geography

The Area is defined by postcode boundaries and covers all SN postcodes together with BA12–BA15. It stretches from Faringdon in the north to Mere in the south, and from Bradford-on-Avon in the west to Marlborough in the east, bringing together members from a diverse mix of towns, rural communities, heritage sites and industrial locations.

Events and getting involved

Events are being re-established from early 2026, with plans for a mix of:

  • Technical visits to local employers, research organisations and heritage sites.

  • Informal socials /networking events to help members meet, network and share experiences.

  • Professional development sessions supporting registration, skills growth and lifelong learning.

All members in the Area are welcome at these activities, and suggestions for venues, topics or collaborations are actively invited. Those interested in joining the Swindon and North Wiltshire Area Committee, or in supporting individual events, are encouraged to make contact via the Contact Us page so their contribution can be warmly welcomed.
