Whether you've missed anything of interest to you or you would like to get an idea of what's going on, this is a great opportunity to catch-up with events organised by the Northern Yorkshire Young Members panel.

As vast amount of our efforts is dedicated towards education of the younger generation a fantastic job has been done in past months on the recrutiment of volunteers wishing to become Science and Engineering Ambassadors (SEA). With support of STEMNET we now have a dozen of young engineers who are keen to inspire kids to follow their paths!

'Kids in the Fast Lane' was the first major challenge for our Ambassadors and they coped brilliantly helping year 5/6 pupils from North Rigton Primary school to build a Greenpower “Goblin” electric car in a day! This car then made it's appearance on the Countryside Days held at the Yorkshire Showground - to find out more details see Northern Area News Page!

Technical Visits

Since the Young Member panel's reappearance in North Yorkshire area, a number of technical visits have been made to local companies. To cater for the broad range of our members interests these included

BMW Mini plant visit, 23rd July 2009 9th April 2008, DePuy visit - surgical knee replacement Coca-Cola Enterprises, before factory tour of Wakefield manufacturing facilities, 23rd March 2009

Lectures and Workshops

We are keen to help young engineers to expand their knowledge on both technical and non-technical subjects. We do host various lectures and interactive workshops throughout the year targeting various areas of personal development. Topics covered so far ranged from Presentation Skills to Professional Registration.

The 'Speak out for Engineering' presentation skills competition has been relaunched last year and showed a great interest from students of different background end experience. From all applicants 5 candidates have been selected for the final, where a panel of judges had to make a tough decision and select the winner and the runner up. This academic year the competition is planned to be held in February 2010, exact dates yet to be confirmed.
