Engineering and Technology in the Yorkshire Eastern Area

The Yorkshire Eastern Area benefits from a number of progressive engineering and technology related organisations.  The following showcases some of these in the region.

Environmental Technologies:

The Port of Hull, operated by Associated British Ports, features a diverse range of engineering operations including material’s handling, lock gate automation and is currently the UK’s largest timber port (based on tonnage).

Operations adjacent to the Humber estuary are planned to grow with the ‘Green Port Humber’ initiative including Siemens Gamesa who have placed significant investment in a manufacturing plant dockside providing assembly and support services to the offshore Wind Power industry.

The Yorkshire Eastern region has aspirations to grow it’s environmental credentials including supporting a number of offshore wind arrays, carbon capture & storage and a newly commissioned ‘Energy from Waste’ plant employing the latest recycling technologies.

Furthermore the region includes the Saltend Chemicals Park comprising a cluster of world class process engineering businesses including Vivergo Fuels, one of the largest bio ethanol fuel producers in Europe.

Closer to the Holderness coast, and offshore, gas processing and storage operations provide security of natural gas supply to a large proportion of the UK.  For more detail please refer to

The region benefits from a number of leading manufacturing businesses producing innovative products for the pharmaceutical, aerospace, food, industrial, shipbuilding and construction sectors.

Featured amongst our manufacturing capability is a cluster of caravan and leisure home manufacturing businesses producing advanced leisure home products for both the UK and mainland European markets.

The University of Hull offers a range innovative Engineering & Technology education programmes including a newly formed Chemical Engineering degree programme.  Furthermore the university comprises a portfolio of technology research programmes making new discoveries in medical, environmental and materials technologies.

Supporting training for engineering craft apprentices and technicians Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) provides quality training for approximately 140 companies in the region.  The IMechE Yorkshire Eastern regional group have worked closely with HETA to deliver exciting schools liasion projects with the aim of promoting Professional Engineering as a worthwhile career option to students of all ages.
