Message from the Chairman

Hello and welcome to the 2011-2012 installment of the IMechE activities within the Western area of the Yorkshire region.  I would firstly like to thank you, the local members, who have supported our activities and events in the past year; it has been a successful start to a new area.  I mustn’t forget the committee, thank you, for they work hard in the shadows bringing the activities to life.  This year we aim to continue our support for local members across a variety of ages (our oldest member within the region is 94 years old) and disciplines.  This includes professional membership and development, while recognising success for local businesses and catering to your interests as inquisitive engineers.

The local engineering community is enjoying a resurgence and thriving with support and demand for apprenticeships with young engineers also taking advantage of growth within our local companies.  It is great to see, although this leaves us with a good problem of how do we best support them, so they too can enjoy a successful career in engineering and make the most of being a professional member of the IMechE.  If you are a young member and want to get involved with local events, a Young Member Panel is being set-up in 2011.  Look out for details on the Near You website, calendar or on Facebook.  Equally, if you are interested in supporting young members as a mentor through their membership application or in becoming a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) ambassador, please get in touch.

We have a series of events throughout the year that we hope will appeal to most, from sending your children down a coal mine, visiting a biscuit factory or just going to the pub to meet like minded people (any excuse - the cliché of drinking real ale or having tea and biscuits is entirely optional).  We hope that you make the most of these activities and if you want to get involved, again, please get in touch.

All that remains for me to say is that I hope you have a good year and we look forward to meeting you at the events throughout 2011 and 2012.

Thanks and Kind Regards,
Daniel Iddon CEng MIMechE
