IMechE East Yorkshire Summer Social

2014 was the first year the East Yorkshire region hosted a Summer Social event, the goal was to end our fiscal year with one last event which in which members from all engineering disciplines, friends and family could meet in one place and celebrate engineering in  a fun and informal manner.
We are pleased to say that the first attempt at a communal social was a great success with over 50 members and non-members, friends and family, of all ages and backgrounds coming from all over the Yorkshire Region to partake.

The key feature was a Raft Race in which 7 teams from as far away as Leeds assembled to fabricate and then race there bespoke rafts out to a marker buoy and then back to dry land.  With each team having the same materials consisting of plastic barrels, posts and planks of wood and lengths of rope, the level success was determined by the ingenuity, teamwork and resolve of each team.

The setting was the picturesque location of Welton Waters Adventure Centre, along the bank of the Humber just outside of Hull.  As well as the venue and their army of fantastic volunteers facilitating the raft race there was also a wealth of water based activities available on the day such as canoeing, sailing and boat trips.

For those who preferred dry land there was also some great static displays on hand, kindly provided by the Hull Model Boat Group with their impressive displays of fine craftsmanship and attention to detail and the Hull University Formula Student team who brought along their 2014 Formula Student car and Simulator.

For this year's Raft Race the East Yorkshire Area Committee had generously donated two £50 Amazon vouchers as prizes for the team who set the fastest time and the team who were the most entertaining, congratulations to the following teams who snapped up these awards:

For a full breakdown of the 2014 event and all the pictures from the day, check out the
2014 Summer Social Recap page in our archives section kindly put together by Richard A Fry - Hon. IMechE East Yorkshire Young Members Secretary.

Based on the success and positive feedback received this year we hope to make this a recurring event and are currently considering introducing a new custom class in which teams can build their own bespoke raft throughout the year and bring it with them on the day, offering up a new wealth of opportunities for those who want to take the concept that bit further and demonstrate their engineering ingenuity.

Finally I would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone who made this year's event as successful as it was, including all the staff and volunteers at Welton Waters, the Hull Model Boat Group, Hull University Formula Student and of course all of the IMechE committees, Young area and Regional.  Without the enthusiasm and support of everyone involved events like this would not be possible.

If you would like to know more about this event or are interested in getting involved with the 2015 Summer Social please feel free to get in touch.
