This year, the East Yorkshire region held its annual Summer Social at Welton Waters Adventure Centre. The aim of the event was to accommodate everyone from children to fully fledged engineers and to have a fun day out!

The format was similar to last year’s with teams of 4 racing against each other to design, build and race a raft. The team that could think the fastest, paddle the hardest and more importantly work as a team would be crowned the champions. With each team being given 4 barrels, 8 planks of wood and plenty of rope, the challenge was on. Thanks to the Hull University, the winners this year would receive a beautifully designed and 3D printed trophy. It was great to see some weird, whacky and wonderful rafts make it out onto the water and congratulations to all of the teams that took part.

Turn out for the event was impressive with roughly 30 individuals taking part. Aside from the rafting, there was a whole host of interesting activities to get stuck into. The water centre made available their kayaks, windsurfs and even sailing boats. For those not interested in getting wet, Hull University brought along their 3D printers as well as their latest Formula Student race car. Along with the racing theme, the event also included a Formula 1 simulator and I think everyone left the event with a new found respect for Formula 1 drivers!

All of this fun was of course, hungry work. Welton Waters and its volunteers were brilliant in managing the BBQ and drinks for the day.

Finally I would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone that made the event a success. The event simply couldn’t go ahead without the wonderful volunteers and management at Welton Waters Adventure Centre. We have managed to build a great relationship over the past 2 years and are looking forward to growing the event year on year. Thank you to Hull University for their significant contributions as well as to the IMechE committees, Young are and Regional. Your support is what makes this event happen.

If you would like to know more about this event or are interested in getting involved with the 2016 Summer Social, please feel free to get in touch.
