SOFE is organised annually by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' local volunteer groups. It was originally established in 1964 to challenge young engineers to prove that they could 'communicate effectively', which is still an important area in developing engineers today.

The competition provides young engineers with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate and develop their presentation skills and competence in public speaking.  Area heats are judged by a panel of professionals chosen by the local committee and each entry will receive feedback on their presentation afterwards.

2014 saw the revival of the SOFE competition in the Yorkshire Region with area heats occurring in February and the Regional Final taking place in March.  The regional winner was then presented with their award at the Yorkshire Region Annual Dinner at the Cutlers' Hall in Sheffield on the 14th of March.
The competition will now run annually in the region with area heats happening later this year and the regional final in early 2015.  The heat winners will be invited to the Yorkshire Region Annual Dinner where the regional winner will be announced and prizes awarded.

Please see the main SOFE Competition page for full details including how to apply.

Spectators and supporters are welcome but spaces are limited, so if you would like to attend please click the 'Book now' link on this page.
