This Event has been organised by the “Water and Wastewater Technical Activity Committee” of the Process Industries Division of the IMechE. It is hosted by the Process Industries Division and promoted across the Process Industries Community, including the Centres in the Northwest and Yorkshire Regions, the Aberdeen Area, the Northeast area..
This webinar will provide an overview of the valves used within the water industry, their applications, sizing, selection and testing. It is aimed at engineers, designers, and industry professionals seeking to build or reinforce their knowledge of this essential component of water and wastewater systems.
Topics covered include:
- Valve Types: An overview of commonly used valves in water and wastewater applications, including gate, butterfly, check, pressure-reducing, air valves, and more, with discussion of their specific functions and use cases.
- Valve Categories: Valve functions including isolation, regulation, control, check, pressure relief and air.
- Isolation valves: Wedge gate, knife gate, diaphragm, pinch, ball and butterfly.
- Regulation valves: Eccentric plug, plunger, free discharge and needle.
- Control Valves: Line pressure driven valves.
- Check valves: Swing disc check, resilient hinge disc, recoil swing disc, non-slam twin plate (wafer), non-slam nozzle, swing / lift, ball duckbill, foot and anti-pollution.
- Pressure relief: Spring operated poppet, pinch type, pallet type and bursting disc.
- Air valves: Large orifice, dual orifice, triple orifice,
- Valve Operation: Insights into manual, electric, access issues, remote operation, automation valve operating speed requirements
- Valve Selection: Guidance on choosing the right valve type for various scenarios
- Valve Sizing: A look at the principles behind correctly sizing valves to ensure optimal system performance, avoid cavitation, and maintain efficiency.
- Testing & Commissioning: Best practices for factory acceptance testing (FAT), site testing, installation checks, and commissioning procedures to ensure valve reliability and safety before operational handover.
By the end of the session, attendees will have a clear understanding of the key considerations involved in selecting, applying, and managing valves in water projects. This foundational knowledge supports better design decisions, enhances collaboration with suppliers and contractors, and contributes to the successful delivery and long-term operation of water systems.
Webinar Plan
- Introduction of speakers by chair (5 mins)
- Presentation of Introduction to valves in the water industry (40 mins)
- Q and A session (15 mins) – The speakers will take your questions from the chat and answer them at the end of the session
