Description

The Institution of Civil Engineers Yorkshire & Humber Retired Members Section (RICE) invites IMechE members and guests to attend their next talk.

Jim Taylor’s presentation will cover Aldwark Toll Bridge, the only private
vehicular toll bridge in North Yorkshire. It was constructed and opened 254 yeas ago in 1772, as a result of an Act of Parliament to replace a rowing
boat ferry across the River Ure, a tributary of the River Ouse north of York.

There have been several public inquiries to increase tolls, and recently
substantial structural repairs and fabric refurbishment works were undertaken to the bridge. There are proposals for automated traffic and toll systems.

The talk inter alia will comprise, history from inception, bridge formal
assessments, structural repairs and fabric refurbishment works, traffic
forecasts, business case for increases in tolls, public inquiries, construction
works and future proposals.
