Message from the Chairman

Dear Members,

It is an absolute pleasure to take the opportunity of becoming Chair of the IMechE Yorkshire Region. However, I realise not many of the people reading this will really know what that means or have much awareness of how the Institution is structured for that matter. That’s nobody’s fault, it is actually more of an indication of the disassociation which has grown between the membership and the Institution. This is a crying shame because within the Yorkshire Region there are over 6000 like-minded professional engineers who are members and associates of the IMechE just like you and me, wanting to feel valued and engaged with their profession.

In fact, only a fraction of those members form the various volunteer groups that make up the Yorkshire Region’s Areas, Divisions, Networks and Committees. These people come from a range of backgrounds and disciplines including academia, industry, graduates, young members, developing engineers, full-time work, part-time work and retirees, and they gladly devote their free time to bring you a terrific programme of events. These range from technical events, registration workshops, lectures, site visits, networking opportunities, STEM activities and the occasional social event and dinner for good measure. This has been made for the members by the members and we sincerely hope you find at least one event that piques your interest.

There is also much more to look out for from the Yorkshire Region – we have this coming year’s Presidential Visit to plan, schools and educational activities to arrange, the Undergraduate Design Challenge to prep for, and the Yorkshire Region’s centenary in 2021 to work on. So please keep your eyes on the Near You website and the Yorkshire Region’s email newsletter for more developments.

With that in mind, I’d like to start a discussion. I’d like to see more engagement with fellow members through the region’s activities and events. What will bring more people to our events? What events would you like to see and be a part of? What will bring members together and what will encourage members to join in with the volunteer committees and groups? If we bring more people together we will naturally have a stronger community and a stronger voice for our profession. I am genuinely interested in hearing your thoughts and feedback because this extends to the wider issue of bringing people into and more importantly keeping people in our profession. Please contact me directly at because I would like to hear from as many of you as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Luke Farmer MEng(Hons) CEng MIMechE – Chair, IMechE Yorkshire Region
