The Institution of Mechanical Engineers University of Bolton RAK Academic Centre takes pleasure in inviting you to join one of our leading annual student competitions, the Design Challenge. 
The Design Challenge Competition provides first/second year undergraduates with a taste of the ‘real world’ of engineering by setting them a challenge to design, create, present and run a device to a strict technical specification. By working together, we will continue to lead the way in promoting value and cohesion within mechanical engineering. This is a remarkable opportunity for you, as a centre of academic excellence, to join hands with us to support and uphold the future of young aspiring graduates by enabling them to gain real industry experience, practical employability skills, enhanced business and people skills, all within a set time frame. It is intended to complement the academic curriculum which is used by participants towards their projects. 

This year the challenge is to design, build and test a device to climb up the outside of a piece of 15 mm copper pipe lifting an increasing load in the form of a chain. At the top the device will reverse and return to its original starting point. The ‘device’ can be of any construction but it must be electrically powered and meets the size and cost specification detailed below. The relative performance will be determined on the quickest time taken for the device to pull the load to the top of the tube and return to the starting point at the bottom.
