The Heriot-Watt University Dubai (HWUD) IMechE Student Chapter, has collaborated with Wilo Middle East FZE to arrange a pump competition for students to participate in. The competition has targeted all Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering students. Each group can have up to 3 members.
The competition is designed to encourage critical thinking and design analysis. Students are to complete certain tasks within specified time frames. The first stage is preliminary calculations regarding pump discharge, and system head. This stage will enable students to develop theoretical models of their system and to confirm this model via trial and error / simulation / coding. The second stage is that of building the pump rig itself, students will decide the essential components in their system that will be used to make the pumping system, the system is physical and must reinforce the theoretical calculations, through validation.
