Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) is a competition for young engineers designed to help develop verbal and visual communication in explaining technical mechanical engineering related subjects. Co-organised with Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), the competition is administered by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and prize funding is provided through the IMechE Trust Funds.

Who can enter
The competition is open to any
1. Affiliate
2. Associate
3. Member of the Institution who has been professionally registered for ten years or less 

Subject
Competitors must give an oral presentation on a subject relating to mechanical engineering (Presentation slides, materials or props can be used to support a presentation.) 

Competition Rules
- Competitors are required to prepare and submit a written presentation summary of 100 words maximum by 01 October 2026, which should be sent to the organizer when notification is given of the intention to enter the competition. Failure to submit the synopsis may invalidate the entry. 

- Competitors are given 20 mins for the presentation and 10 mins for Q&A session. Topic must be related to Mechanical Engineering.

- Competitors must present in English.

- The presentation must be made by an individual regardless of whether the subject is part of a group technical project.

- Presentation materials (e.g., presentation slides, etc.) could be used.

Scoring
90% of the total marks are given for presentation with only 10% for technical content. This ensures that while all presentations must have mechanical engineering content in its broadest sense (e.g. purpose, research, design, feasibility and practicality), a topic concerning comparatively ‘low’ technology has an equal chance of success as one which is technologically very complex. 

Prize 
The champion and the first runner-up will be awarded with cash prizes of £300 and £200 respectively and will have the chance to represent Hong Kong in the regional/international SOfE.
