Chairman Message

Mick Tse
YMS Chairman 2020-2021

The year 2020 is a tough time for the global society. The impact of the COVID-19 had rudimentarily transformed the ways we live, we work and we communicate. Despite the social distancing induced a lot of challenges to our society, the technology undoubtedly enabled us to embark on the digital transformation journey. The IMechE Webinar Hub on the IMechE website is a very good illustration.

I joined IMechE as a student member since my early time at University. Through hosting and participating in different events, not only do I explored different learning opportunities but also to gain a more thorough understanding of how diversified and professional a mechanical engineer is. It had been an exceptional experience in my life to acquire innovative knowledge, meet new friends, and most importantly to learn from and with my peers.

It is my great honour to be the Chairman to serve the IMechE. I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the past committee for their work in hosting various activities to our fellow members.
This year, our YMS will incorporate the “Digital Technology” as the new strategic objective, linking it with the “Professionalism” and “Connectedness”.

Digital Technology
The outbreak had brought the digitalization to a new era. Social distancing encouraged the use of digital technology. With the advantages of convenience and borderless nature, smart digital technology enhanced the efficiency in identifying and diagnosing, as well as resolving problems. Although the Mechanical Engineering possesses a long history in industries, i.e. aerospace, automotive, construction and building, power & processing, manufacturing, railway, etc., the digital technology could definitely bring values in accuracy and efficiency in works. Through these advancing technology, we hope to stimulate creativity and innovation and add value to mechanical engineering.

Professionalism
Serving the young members in the professional progression through developing their accreditation as professional engineers had long been one of the key objectives of YMS. Our team will leap forward to organize diversified technical events, including but not limited to technical seminars, visits, workshops to strengthen members’ technical knowledge.

While the professional technical knowledge is incorporated as competences of a Chartered Engineer, the leadership and interpersonal skills are equally important too. Therefore, we will explore the relevant soft skills workshops that help equip our members.

For students or affiliates, we will continue to serve as a platform to provide advice to facilitate their career progression.

Connectedness
Thanks to the efforts of the past Chairman, the close relationship between internal and external groups had established a platform to get connected easily. Through team building events, we will strive to maintain a strong bonding with our internal group and networks. To tie with the strategic objective of digital technology, we will also build up our networks and strive for success in our upcoming events.

Located in the North East Asia Region (NEAR), YMS treasure this global platform and is looking for opportunities to get connected with other young member groups within the region.

In addition, we always treasure students as a valuable asset to YMS. Being the driving force of future society, we will sustain our efforts and resources in student’s development.

Chairman Message

Grace Tam
YMS Chairlady 2019-2020

Beginning since my time in University, IMechE YMS has been a big, big part of my life. I joined IMechE as a student member, and it opened new doors in my life. There are many networking opportunities, allowing me to access the professional engineers’ world. It has been an excellent source of new perspectives and ideas. While exchanging best practice knowledge, I learn about my peers and stay abreast of the latest industry developments. IMechE never disappoints me in my career development. It’s a great honour and privilege to be your Chairman, giving back to IMechE and serving you all.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and broadest branches of engineering. We are involved in every industry, say aerospace, automotive, power, railway, manufacturing, construction and building etc., you name it. Of course, our job involves different machines, different mechanical systems, but we don’t limit ourselves only in converting thermal energy into useful work, we convert our dreams into reality; we realize our dreams, we make our dreams come true! We should be proud of ourselves. Every mechanical engineer could be the next James Watt, the next Henry Ford, the next George Stephenson. We play a dominant role in enhancing safety, economic vitality, enjoyment and overall quality of life throughout the world. We use maths and science to provide innovation and inventions that shape our society and improve the way we live and work. We, mechanical engineers, are providing the power that propels the world forward.

Hong Kong is a place where East meets West. We have a lively cosmopolitan environment with free flow of information, ideas and people. In fast growing region particularly in the Greater China region, our speciality and trilingual capabilities reinforces our competitive edge as the hub of new generation. We must gear up, take proactive steps to attract or keep young, creative and talented people in our engineering profession. I shall dedicate myself in connecting our young members and volunteers, not only to help you along your career journey, but also join hands to work together to influence and make a better future.

Looking back, YMS is growing stronger and achieving the goals we set. I want to thank all the past chairmen and committees for your great effort. Thank you IMechE Hong Kong Branch for your unwavering support and encouragement. Thank you to my executive committee members, I’m so glad to have you onboard and I can’t wait to work on more great things together. Last but not the least, on behalf of IMechE YMS, I would like to express our appreciation and gratefulness to all IMechE young members. Thank you for choosing IMechE; thank you for being our members. It represents your commitment and dedication to the profession. We will always remember that, we are here to serve you. You are our most important asset; you are the value of IMechE, and you are our future.

Chairman Message

Tony Yip
YMS Chairman 2018-2019

I am honored to be the chairman of IMechE HKB YMS in the coming year. This year marks the 21
st anniversary of the IMechE HK Branch.  Twenty-one years is in fact not lengthy, but it has been sufficient for the branch to achieve the number of members to now over 3,500.   This achievement is not only attribute to the great effort by all the past chairmen and committees, but also from the supports from all our members, especially the young members, who constitute more than half of total number of IMechE members.

This year, our YMS will start with a diverse set of strategic objectives and targets lined up.  Our focusing areas will be “Professionalism”, “Social Responsibility” and “Connections”.

Professionalism

Since its establishment, YMS have been serving to help young members developing progress towards gaining chartered status, and 'improve the world through engineering'.  Our team will continue to organize various technical visits, seminars and workshops to enhance members’ technical aspects.  These are all essential for upholding the standing of the engineering profession.

Besides technical side, good soft skill is undoubtedly the key to success in the engineering career.  This year we will organize a series of presentation & leadership workshops.  Furthermore, given a large portion of our young members being students or affiliates, we will organize interview workshops, & in the meantime, guide them to pave the way for future career development.

Social Responsibility

Engineering is not all only about technical knowledge but also how it impacts the community. We contributes ourselves in variety of volunteer services, including wheelchair repairing, which is a good representation of it. We are applying mechanical knowledge to serve the disables. In the coming year, we will expand its service with other sub-branches and explore more services opportunity.

For promoting engineering to the community, we also understand our role to engaging the youth. Annually, we organized functions together, such as, the Young Inventor Competition, Future Engineers Projects, etc., to broaden secondary school students’ exposure and interests in the field. This year we will continue to support and enrich the high school engineering competition events.

Connections

“Connections” construct the relationship among people and provide channels to receive new information.  Over the years, we are glad to have maintained a lots of friendly relations with different internal and external groups.

In the coming year, we will strive for strengthening these connections and enriching our networks for our members. IMechE HKB is among the North East Asia Region (NEAR) and share it with Beijing, Shanghai, Japan, etc.  We treasure this international platform and so we are looking for chance to meet up the young member groups of these areas.

In addition, for student connection, we have ten student chapters up to now under the IMechE YMS.  They are all important assets to us and the branch.  We will put more effort and resources on them, reinforcing our connections and giving them more support and guideline.

Joining us

YMS is always acting as a linkage between young members and the main branch.  On one side, we convey young members’ feedback to the headquarters, on the other hand, we support main branch by mobilizing our young members to deliver on their objectives and plans.

However, all our plans will not be successful without members’ active participation.  Therefore, I appeal to all of you to join our coming functions and give us feedback for quality improvement of our works.  I am confident that, with your involvement, it will definitely be another successful year.

Last but not least, we would like to take this opportunity to promote our YMS “facebook page”. Please search “IMechE Hong Kong Young Members”, & our events updates can be found in the page.

Chairman Message

Barry Ng
YMS Chairman 2017-2018

I am honored to be the chairman of IMechE HKB YMS in the coming year.  This year marks the 20th anniversary of the IMechE HK Branch.  Twenty years is in fact not lengthy, but it has been sufficient for the branch to double the number of members to now over 3,500.   This achievement is not only attribute to the great effort by all the past chairmen and committees, but also the relentless supports from all our members, especially the young members, who constitute more than half of total number of IMechE members.

This year, has really started strongly for the YMS, with a diverse set of strategic objectives and targets lined up.  This year, we will try some more initiatives, but our focusing areas will be trimmed into two, they are “Professionalism” and “Connections”.

Professionalism
Since its establishment, YMS have been serving to help young members developing progress towards gaining chartered status, and 'improve the world through engineering'.  Therefore, our team will continue to organize various technical visits, seminars and workshops to enhance members’ technical knowledge.  These are all essential for upholding the standing of the engineering profession.

Besides technical side, good soft skill is undoubtedly the another key to success in the engineering career.  With the success of the leadership workshop held last year, we are planning to organize a similar soft skill workshop in early next year.  Furthermore, given a large portion of our young members being students or affiliates, we will organize an interview workshop in around Q4 of this year to bring them tips for a successful job interview, in the meantime, guide them to pave the way for their future career development.

Engineering is not all about technical knowledge but also how it impacts the community. Having worked for more than three years, our wheelchair service is a good representation of it, in which we are applying mechanical knowledge to make new device to help the disables.  For the sustainable growth of this meaningful service, in the coming year, we will either expand its service or explore one more service group.

Connections

“Connections” construct the relationship among people and provide channels to receive new information.  Over the years, we are glad to have maintained a lots of friendly relations with different internal and external groups.  Annually, we organized functions together, such as, the Young Inventor Competition, Future Engineers Projects, etc.

We will explore the possibility to organize a joint function with one of these groups in this year.

In addition, we have eight student chapters up to now under the IMechE YMS.  They are all important assets to us and the branch.  Therefore, we will put more effort and resources on them, reinforcing our connections and giving them more support and guideline.

Chairman Message

Adriane Chau
YMS Chairman 2015-2016

There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift to fix all machines. After serving his company for 30 years, he retired. Several years later the company contacted him to fix a multi-million dollar machines. They had tried everything and everyone else to get the machine to work but to no avail. In desperation, they called on the engineer. The engineer spent a day to figure it, marked the broken component with a chalk. He asked for 50,001 for his service. The company demanded an itemized accounting of his charge, the engineer responded briefly, one chalk costs 1 dollar, and the rest are for my professional knowledge and focus mindset which is priceless.

Good evening all honorable guests, fellows members and folks, On behalf of the institution I’d like to welcome everyone to this evening’s AGM of YMS. I am Adriane Chau, your chair-person for 2015-2016 session.
Last year, was a year full of accomplishment and achievements for YMS. This year, we will keep up the momentum and continue with an ambitious agenda.

In this coming session, our young member will continue to serve in the following areas,

1. Professionalism
I would like to ask all of you a question. Have you ever stopped to think how engineering achievements impact your everyday life? Safe drinking water, bathroom facilities, food processors, microwave ovens, automobiles, air conditioning, and so on …. May not even existed in the world. This is how important our profession is to change our daily life in a better way, which linked every one of us together to build better quality of life for the society.  Professionalism is always a key focus in the coming year, our team will continue to promote the engineering professions in Hong Kong by organizing difference activities, including technical visits, seminars and workshops. We will also work closely with other institutions in Hong Kong to co-organize events to share experience and pool resources to bring success to the engineering professions.

2. Integrity
Integrity is the fundamental responsibility of our professions.

As engineers, we have knowledge and skills well beyond those of most consumers of our work, who must trust us to produce systems that operate safely, reliably, and with minimal negative impact. Human lives can depend upon the quality of our work, and significant economic and environmental consequences can result from our work that we do.

Thus, in coming year, more workshops and seminars will be held focusing on this to our members to constantly remind ourselves the importance of integrity that built our foundation of the professions.

3. Leadership
Leadership is an important core value of us. We believe the growth and succession in leadership is the key element to bring succession to our professions.

YMS provides our members a platform to gain the good leadership skill and great management practice in our working team. We make friends, share our experience and fund, and most importantly, we communicate. With all these good qualities in YMS, I believe here is the place to grow our future leaders in the professions.

Here comes to the end of my sharing. Hope you all will enjoy the rest of the night and a wonderful year ahead.

Chairman Message

Peter Wong
YMS Chairman 2013-2014
Chairman Report 2013-2014

Dear Fellow YMS Members,

Nice to have the chance to share with you. I am Peter Wong, work as an engineer specialist in tunnel ventilation system design. I have been serving the YMS team for 6 years after my graduate. Taking up the role of chairman is an honor to me. I would like express my appreciation to all the YMS members for their support, especially to the chairman and past-chairman who built up the foundation and continue to support the growth of the YMS team.

Being the chair-person is not only an honor to me. In fact, being the chair-person of the team is a valuable and meaningful commitment to our team members, to the institution, and to me. And I would like to take the chance here to share with you my Strategies in leading YMS in the coming year.

1. Professionalism

YMS, we are a group of young engineers, who serve the institution and support our Hong Kong Main Branch in the development of the institution and the growth of membership and professionalism in the Hong Kong, China region.

Our team will continue to promote the engineering professions by organizing difference activities, including Technical visits, seminars and workshops, so that our members could be benefit from it. Moreover, we will keep the connection with the YMS of other institutions in Hong Kong, to co-organize activities and share experience and resourses to bring success to the engineering professions.

2. Sustainability

Sustainability is important to the growth of the industry. Being in the young member section, we are fresh and have close linkage to the young generation. We will continue putting effort in promoting engineering to the Hong Kong society aims to engage fresh blood to join our professions. We will continue to organize design competition for secondary school students and career talk for the engineering students in university.

3. Leadership

Another important core value of YMS I would like to emphasize here is “Coaching & Leadership” in our YMS team. We believe the growth and succession of leadership is the key element to the success of our professions. We are people oriented and focus on the growth of our team members, as well as our young members. There are many good leadership qualities we could search on the internet easily, such as: Having vision, Integrity, Strategic planning, Creativity, Communication, Delegation, Commitment and A sense of Humor.

We have a very neutral platform in YMS. Members in the team will gain the good leadership skill and good management practice in our working team. We communicate, make new friends, and share our experience and share our fun.

Coaching, modeling and practicing, is one of the key roads for the growth of leadership in IMechE. We have many good models in the IMechE Hong Kong Branch, our experienced engineers and leaders in the branch committee. We are copying, adding our own values and practicing in it. And our senior young members will guide the young members to grow in the team.

This leadership model is not a new model, but it is a great and beautiful model that we have to value and keep the succession of it. Therefore, further enhancing leadership and promoting the good management practice is one of my main strategies in leading YMS. We will provide a good platform for the growth of young engineers, and we will keep engaging new young members to join our YMS team, through organizing leadership associated activities.

To enhance the quality of service and to make sure that each activity is a nice and enjoyable one to our members and to our YMS team members, we believe the growth of leadership is a key to open the door of it.

Everyone got a Fire Match in their heart. As an engineer, I believe lighting up this Fire of Leadership in their heart is one of the ways to improve the world through engineering. And our team of IMechE HKB YMS will keep the effort in it.

Here comes to the end of my sharing. Hope you will enjoy the coming wonderful year!
