Serving the young members in the professional progression through developing their accreditation as professional engineers had long been one of the key objectives of YMS. Our team will leap forward to organize diversified technical events, including but not limited to technical seminars, visits, workshops to strengthen members’ technical knowledge.

While the professional technical knowledge is incorporated as competences of a Chartered Engineer, the leadership and interpersonal skills are equally important too. Therefore, we will explore the relevant soft skills workshops that help equip our members.

For students or affiliates, we will continue to serve as a platform to provide advice to facilitate their career progression.

Connectedness
Thanks to the efforts of the past Chairman, the close relationship between internal and external groups had established a platform to get connected easily. Through team building events, we will strive to maintain a strong bonding with our internal group and networks. To tie with the strategic objective of digital technology, we will also build up our networks and strive for success in our upcoming events.

Located in the North East Asia Region (NEAR), YMS treasure this global platform and is looking for opportunities to get connected with other young member groups within the region.

In addition, we always treasure students as a valuable asset to YMS. Being the driving force of future society, we will sustain our efforts and resources in student’s development.

Chairman Message

Adriane Chau
YMS Chairman 2015-2016

There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift to fix all machines. After serving his company for 30 years, he retired. Several years later the company contacted him to fix a multi-million dollar machines. They had tried everything and everyone else to get the machine to work but to no avail. In desperation, they called on the engineer. The engineer spent a day to figure it, marked the broken component with a chalk. He asked for 50,001 for his service. The company demanded an itemized accounting of his charge, the engineer responded briefly, one chalk costs 1 dollar, and the rest are for my professional knowledge and focus mindset which is priceless.

Good evening all honorable guests, fellows members and folks, On behalf of the institution I’d like to welcome everyone to this evening’s AGM of YMS. I am Adriane Chau, your chair-person for 2015-2016 session.
Last year, was a year full of accomplishment and achievements for YMS. This year, we will keep up the momentum and continue with an ambitious agenda.

In this coming session, our young member will continue to serve in the following areas,

1. Professionalism
I would like to ask all of you a question. Have you ever stopped to think how engineering achievements impact your everyday life? Safe drinking water, bathroom facilities, food processors, microwave ovens, automobiles, air conditioning, and so on …. May not even existed in the world. This is how important our profession is to change our daily life in a better way, which linked every one of us together to build better quality of life for the society.  Professionalism is always a key focus in the coming year, our team will continue to promote the engineering professions in Hong Kong by organizing difference activities, including technical visits, seminars and workshops. We will also work closely with other institutions in Hong Kong to co-organize events to share experience and pool resources to bring success to the engineering professions.

2. Integrity
Integrity is the fundamental responsibility of our professions.

As engineers, we have knowledge and skills well beyond those of most consumers of our work, who must trust us to produce systems that operate safely, reliably, and with minimal negative impact. Human lives can depend upon the quality of our work, and significant economic and environmental consequences can result from our work that we do.

Thus, in coming year, more workshops and seminars will be held focusing on this to our members to constantly remind ourselves the importance of integrity that built our foundation of the professions.

3. Leadership
Leadership is an important core value of us. We believe the growth and succession in leadership is the key element to bring succession to our professions.

YMS provides our members a platform to gain the good leadership skill and great management practice in our working team. We make friends, share our experience and fund, and most importantly, we communicate. With all these good qualities in YMS, I believe here is the place to grow our future leaders in the professions.

Here comes to the end of my sharing. Hope you all will enjoy the rest of the night and a wonderful year ahead.

I am glad to continue my chairmanship for the new session 2014-2015. Being the chair-person is not only an honor to me. In fact, it is a valuable and meaningful commitment to our team members, to the institution, and to me. I would like to share with our strategies in the coming year.

In the coming session, our YMS will continue to serve for the three main objectives – Professionalism, Sustainability, and Leadership.

1. Professionalism
Our team will continue promoting the engineering professions by organizing difference activities, including technical visits, seminars and workshops for our members. Moreover, we will keep the connection with other institutions in Hong Kong to bring success to the engineering professions.

2. Sustainability
We will continue promoting engineering to the Hong Kong society. We will continue organizing event for the secondary school students and develop our student chapters in the university’s campus.

More than that, we will put more effort and resources in our student chapters, giving more support and guidelines for their team building and personal development.

3. Leadership
We will keep enhancing leadership and promoting the good management practice.

More than that we will further re-structure our YMS team, to team up our volunteers, and increase the communication and interaction between our members.

We will further enhance the teamwork, and optimize the documentation system of the team, so as to increase the work efficiency. We will organize leadership related activities targeting to develop our future leaders. We will provide a good platform for the growth of young engineers, and we will keep engaging new young members to join our YMS team.

I believe YMS is a place to grow our future leader. Everyone got their leadership in their heart. I truly believe all of our YMS members will be an outstanding leader. We are all improving the world through engineering. Our team of IMechE HKB YMS will keep the effort.

Here comes to the end of my sharing. Lastly, I would like to take the chance to express my appreciate to our main branch members for their support, our YMS and student chapter members. Especially thank you for our organizing committee of this AGM and Annual dinner.

Peter Wong
YMS Chairman 2013-2014
Chairman Report 2013-2014

Dear Fellow YMS Members,

Nice to have the chance to share with you. I am Peter Wong, work as an engineer specialist in tunnel ventilation system design. I have been serving the YMS team for 6 years after my graduate. Taking up the role of chairman is an honor to me. I would like express my appreciation to all the YMS members for their support, especially to the chairman and past-chairman who built up the foundation and continue to support the growth of the YMS team.

Being the chair-person is not only an honor to me. In fact, being the chair-person of the team is a valuable and meaningful commitment to our team members, to the institution, and to me. And I would like to take the chance here to share with you my Strategies in leading YMS in the coming year.

1. Professionalism

YMS, we are a group of young engineers, who serve the institution and support our Hong Kong Main Branch in the development of the institution and the growth of membership and professionalism in the Hong Kong, China region.

Our team will continue to promote the engineering professions by organizing difference activities, including Technical visits, seminars and workshops, so that our members could be benefit from it. Moreover, we will keep the connection with the YMS of other institutions in Hong Kong, to co-organize activities and share experience and resourses to bring success to the engineering professions.

2. Sustainability

Sustainability is important to the growth of the industry. Being in the young member section, we are fresh and have close linkage to the young generation. We will continue putting effort in promoting engineering to the Hong Kong society aims to engage fresh blood to join our professions. We will continue to organize design competition for secondary school students and career talk for the engineering students in university.

3. Leadership

Another important core value of YMS I would like to emphasize here is “Coaching & Leadership” in our YMS team. We believe the growth and succession of leadership is the key element to the success of our professions. We are people oriented and focus on the growth of our team members, as well as our young members. There are many good leadership qualities we could search on the internet easily, such as: Having vision, Integrity, Strategic planning, Creativity, Communication, Delegation, Commitment and A sense of Humor.

We have a very neutral platform in YMS. Members in the team will gain the good leadership skill and good management practice in our working team. We communicate, make new friends, and share our experience and share our fun.

Coaching, modeling and practicing, is one of the key roads for the growth of leadership in IMechE. We have many good models in the IMechE Hong Kong Branch, our experienced engineers and leaders in the branch committee. We are copying, adding our own values and practicing in it. And our senior young members will guide the young members to grow in the team.

This leadership model is not a new model, but it is a great and beautiful model that we have to value and keep the succession of it. Therefore, further enhancing leadership and promoting the good management practice is one of my main strategies in leading YMS. We will provide a good platform for the growth of young engineers, and we will keep engaging new young members to join our YMS team, through organizing leadership associated activities.

To enhance the quality of service and to make sure that each activity is a nice and enjoyable one to our members and to our YMS team members, we believe the growth of leadership is a key to open the door of it.

Everyone got a Fire Match in their heart. As an engineer, I believe lighting up this Fire of Leadership in their heart is one of the ways to improve the world through engineering. And our team of IMechE HKB YMS will keep the effort in it.

Here comes to the end of my sharing. Hope you will enjoy the coming wonderful year!
