Welcome to New Zealand

The IMechE New Zealand Panel is run by a small group of passionate volunteers for over 250 local members. The Panels’ committee is led by John Wright as Interim Chair, Vacant as Secretary, Hugh Evans as Treasurer and Charlie Keenan as Young Members Rep. Regular committee positions are held by persons who provide ongoing support for our work and we are always interested to hear from new potential volunteers. See the contact us page for more details and get in touch if you are interested!

We also have close links to the Mechanical Engineering Group (MEG) of Engineering New Zealand for technical events, webinars and visits.

The Panel exists to:

  1. Represent IMechE and its members on a local basis.
  2. Promote mechanical engineering and STEM.
  3. Support IMechE members new to New Zealand.

To achieve these goals, we have three key areas of value and engagement. Here’s what they mean for us, and for you:

Technical Lectures, Webinars & Visits

Attending one of our technical events keeps you up to speed with developments in the industry, connects you to potential employers and boosts your professional network. Our events are designed to contribute towards the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) requirements which are now mandatory for many engineers.

If you wish to present at one of our events, you will become a more confident speaker and have a chance to advertise your work to a diverse audience of industry experts.

Social Networking, Mentoring and Accreditation

The Panel conducts Professional Review Interviews for CEng candidates, and formal mentoring for persons following the Institution’s Monitored Professional Development/ Supported Registration Schemes. More information on these initiatives is available directly through the IMechE.

Our volunteers are in an excellent position to offer individual mentoring and career guidance to selected individuals on request.

Becoming connected with our Panel boosts your career resume and paves the way for long term friendships.

Building connections with local Universities

New Zealand is home to a number of universities and polytechnics, and this creates an excellent opportunity for us to connect with the future of the profession.

Through a network of dedicated University reps, we seek to collaborate with higher education establishments in identifying potential presentation opportunities and technical visits.

In return, we offer many events of interest to young engineers and students, such as mentoring nights, the prestigious Frederic Barnes Waldron Best Student Award, and the Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Competition. Keep an eye on these pages for more details.
